Tools & Gadgets that make my life easier

Can I share some of my favorite kitchen tools and gadgets? Well not that you have much of a choice, because I am going to tell you anyway 😀 I don’t know about you, but there are some things in my kitchen that I have developed deep love for and I want to share them with you.

Vegetable Peeler

This is the only peeler that I have been using for years now. I have accidentally thrown away at least 5 of these, but then I went and bought…

the same exact one again and again. To me this one fit perfectly in the hand and because you are using a front to back motion with your arm not your wrist to peel potatoes (lets say), your hand does not get tired and you can do the job much quicker then with the peeler that you have to to the side.

Silicone Spatula

This silicone spatula happens to be the same brand as the above vegetable peeler. The reason why I love it so much, is that it’s very easy to maneuver it around your bowl, it is sturdy enough to scrape your frosting off the bowl, but the soft edges around, give you the ability to get every little bit of frosting or whatever else it is that you are trying to get. Also, the relatively big surface of the spatula itself, lets you spoon the frosting out of the bowl, in less amount of time. Other spatulas promise to do the job, but have seemed to fail on every aspect that this one exceeds at, for that reason, I have donated all of my other spatulas and now have 3 of these babies in my drawer 😀

Mesh Skimmer

I don’t know about you guys, but I hated to skim the chicken broth with a slotted spoon. For years, I didn’t even know that this thing existed. I have never seen it in any of the stores and never seen it in anybody else’s homes. The slotted spoon would leave particles in my broth, so then I would have to strain the broth through the paper towel to get all of them out. This mesh skimmer has a very fine mesh, so it picks up all of those tiny things that you would otherwise leave with your slotted spoon. I think when I saw it in Kitchen Kaboodle a couple of months ago, I heard the angels singing “Hallelujah” in the back of my head. Yeah. I was that excited.

Silpat Non Stick Baking Mat

I believe mine is a different brand then the one shown above, but the idea is the same. This has saved me a ton of money on parchment paper, which is the only choice you have when baking meringue and other things that tend to stick to the baking surface like there’s no tomorrow. They do the same thing as a parchment paper, but these reusable and washable.

Revolving Cake Stand

I really did underestimate the usefulness of this stand and realized how much better looking my cakes might have been had I bought it earlier, very late. But as they say, ‘better late then never’, so for all those that are into cakes and cake decorating, this is a true ‘must have’. You will never be able to get the icing on your cakes perfectly smooth if you do not have some sort of a revolving cake stand. So take it from a person that knows a difference, do yourself a favor and get this stand!

Tabletop Convection, Toaster Oven

I don’t know about you, but I do not like crowding up countertops with things, so when my mom and sister bought a tabletop convection/toaster oven, I didn’t really think much of it. My counter space at that point was more important to me, besides, it’s not like I don’t have an oven or a toaster when I need it. I already had a microwave, a Kitchen Aid Mixer, a knife block and a teapot sitting there all the time, so I wasn’t about to put something else there. But, I had a change of heart. I think the crunchy baguettes that you can make crunchy in under 4 minutes, or the oven toasted ‘Panini” sandwiches, or the chicken that you can conveniently cook in this oven might have had something to do with that. I mean, under normal circumstances you’re not going to heat up the big oven to just toast up one sandwich, or for those 2 strips of bacon that you want with your egg in the morning, so yes, I love my tabletop oven! I love the fact that it heats up very quickly; it takes less electricity to do the same job as the big oven, it is always ready to use and I do not feel guilty about heating up a whole oven, for 2 bacon slices.
Oh and another thing that I love about this particular model, is the fact that the digital control display is a “flat surface”, so you can wipe it in one hand motion and make it shiny/clean, without having to dig in all the nooks and crannies of each button, if the crumbs got in there.

Kitchen Aid Mixer

Last, but definitely least, this item I can sing praise to, forever. It gets a very good workout in my kitchen. When I was getting married, my mom asked me what I wanted as a gift and I asked for a Kitchen Aid mixer. The first one I had lasted me for about 3 years before it abruptly refused to turn on and I had we bought it at Bed Bath and Beyond like I did the second time, I might have been able to just bring it back and exchange it, but given the fact that it was bought at Costco, I had no choice but to buy a new one (the 20% off coupon, came in really handy with this purchase!). The picture above is of the same exact one I have right now. It’s a little stronger and bigger then the first I had.
What I like the most about this mixer is that it does all the whipping by itself – you just sit there and watch it work. I do a lot of baking, so it’s a lifesaver in my kitchen. I can do other things while it does the work.
Also, I love how fluffy my mashed potatoes come out with the help of the mixer.
Oh and it’s magical, not to have to kneed the dough for breads and pastries by hand :).
Another thing that I do with it, is grind my own meat. I have an attachment that, you just stick at the top and you put chunks of the meat in and it gives you ground meat out. Having very good memories of how we used to grind meat by hand, I really appreciate this piece of equipment!
I almost forgot! I have an ice cream bowl to make ice cream as well. I make my own ice cream and sorbets, thanks to Kitchen Aid!

There is a lot more equipment in my kitchen that I like, but these by far are my favorite ones!
