Kompot Fruit Beverage

Kompot is a Slavic beverage that’s similar to a homemade fruit punch. This is a great way to use any leftover berries or fruit and turn it into a delicious drink the entire family will crave.

What is Russian Kompot?

Kompot is a drink that is made by boiling fruits or berries in water, then adding sugar and lemon juice to balance out the flavor.

This was the “juice” we drank growing up. Similar to a fruit punch, it’s made with fruits but is not a straight-up blended juice. Although, many bottled juices we drink today are so diluted that they taste identical to kompot.

Making kompot is an easy way to serve something refreshing that everyone can enjoy. Kompot also makes a wonderful party drink as you can just strain it and fill a large drink dispenser with the delicious beverage. Yum!

Turn Fruit into Fruit Juice

If you’ve ever wondered how to make fruit juice, this is it! Making this beverage is a good way to use fruits and berries that are past their prime that no one wants to eat fresh, but you don’t want to throw away either.

Back in the day when many people had fruit orchards, this was a wonderful way to preserve fruits and some of their vitamins for the winter months when fresh fruits were not available. People would make up to a hundred gallon-sized jars and keep them in their cellars through the winter. Then, they could simply open one of the jars and serve at dinner or lunch.

Fruit Punch Juice

I really wonder how many people still make fruit punch juice as our parents used to when we were kids? I still do this all the time. Usually, I stock my freezer up with berries during the summer when the berries are at the peak of their flavor and at a reasonable price. Then throughout the next couple of months, I make compote or fruit punch juice with them.

How to Make Kompot

*For detailed recipe instructions see the recipe card bottom of the post.

You can make kompot with any kind of fruit, be it an apple, pear, plum or a berry. I’m sure we all know how to make it, but just in case you don’t, here it is.

  • Boil water, then add sugar and hard fruit like apples (if using any).
  • Add berries, then let the liquid sit for about an hour.
  • Refrigerate or serve over ice.

Ingredients

  • 5 qt water
  • 3 cups granulated sugar or to taste
  • 1 lbs berries raspberry/blueberry/strawberry
  • 4-5 medium apples cored and cut into medium sized pieces
  • 1 to 2 tbsp lemon juice (optional)

Instructions

How to make Fruit Kompot Drink

  1. Bring 5 quart of water to a boil in a large pot. Add sugar and apples and cook for about 3-4 minutes after it comes to a boil.

Lastly add 1 lb of berries, cover with a lid and turn off heat. Let sit for at least an hour before serving over ice or bringing it to room temperature and refrigerating it.

  2. Note: If the berries don’t have enough acidity in them, I add the juice of 1/2 lemon, but usually I don’t need to do this. You will need to taste the kompot after all the ingredients are added and decide if you need to add a little acidity.

Oh wow, didn't think there was one russian who didn't know how to make it, but this just proves the point that there is no such thing as “too simple”. Hopefully this can serve others that are still not in in 'the know'))

I don't like to post simple recipes like this, but sometimes I think, what if there is a lonely soul looking for a recipe of compote and I don't post the recipe and they will forever miss the taste of this wonderful drink… Hold on, I think I got a little carried away lol)))) haha.. but yeah, I don't usually post things like this, I am not sure why I decided to put this one up.
My mom makes compote all the time and I used to hold on to my raspberries like they are the last thing I'll own, wanting to give them an opportunity to be in something more grand, like… Raspberry Frangipane Tart, but then I realized that if I don't use them up a couple of months after I freeze them, I will most likely end up tossing them alltogether cuz I don't like things that have been sitting in my freezer for too long, so since then I have been making compote on regular basis.

Oh, and great minds think alike 😉
